National Railway Museum York

The National Railway Museum has over 6,000 objects on display of which around 100 are locomotives or rolling stock which tell the stories for Britain's railway innovation. The collection also includes fine jewellery worn by railway queens, models of planes, boats and hovercraft, and experimental technologies such as Louis Brennan's Gyroscopic Mono-rail car.The National Railway Museum was established on its present site, the former York North locomotive depot, in 1975, when it took over the former British Railways collection located in Clapham and the York Railway Museum located off Queen Street, immediately to the southeast of the railway station since then, the collection has continued to grow.The museum is accessible on foot from York railway station. A "roadtrain" runs from the city centre (near York Minster) to the museum on Leeman Road during half-term, holidays and summer. York Park and Ride also serve the museum from the car park entrance, on Line 2 (Rawcliffe Bar-York). Admission to the museum has been free since 2001. It is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm during February half-term holiday, then Wednesday to Sunday only from 10 am to 5 pm.

A popular holiday site in North Yorkshire, York Rowntree Park Club Campsite offers level pitches located on the banks of the River Ouse. Some pitches have attractive hedging and glades which provide not only a scenic treat but also ensure your privacy. The Club Campsite is within easy walking distance of the beautiful and historic city of York and also makes for an excellent base from which to explore the Yorkshire area. York itself has so much to see and do that you'll find the time can slip by all too easily. Using a pedestrian gate at the back of the site leads you to a parade of local shops, including a fantastic fish and chip shop with cafe, Indian and Thai restaurants and numerous takeaways as well as a selection of Cafe's, food and convenience shops. Although the site is near to the city centre, it is peaceful and has a lovely rural feel, with pleasant walks down the side of the river to the Millennium bridge and more. York Rowntree Park Club Campsite is ideal for those wishing to visit York Minster - the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe. Do include a walk to the city's medieval walls and the Shambles to get a feel of the old city with its medieval timber framed houses. You may also stumble across Snickelways of York which is a collection of small street and footpaths. Why not walk down Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate: a street of historical interest which is the shortest street in York with the longest name. Whilst staying at York Rowntree Park why not call in at the many real ale pubs, The York Dungeons, Jorvik Viking Centre and take a time-car, which will transport you back to the city's distant past. Should you have any budding archaeologists in the family, visit the ARC at St Saviours Church and train enthusiasts of all ages won't want to miss the award-winning National Railway Museum. Please note: this campsite is situated within York Flood Defense boundaries. When the Environmental Agency takes the decision to activate the defense it is often at short notice and the site has to be evacuated. There's a park and ride option, allowing you to easily access the town without a car. The site is close to a late opening supermarket, handy for when you need to stock up on essentials. For evening entertainment, there is the Stephen Joseph Theatre, which is home to playwright Alan Aykbourn's wonderful work. Cambridge Cherry Hinton Club Campsite has been imaginatively landscaped to create the impression of being in the heart of the countryside while only a 25-minute bus journey to the city centre of beautiful Cambridge. The campsite gives you easy access to guided walking tours of the nearby medieval colleges where you can enjoy the academic atmosphere that makes the city famous. Wander along or take a punt on the River Cam to see colleges like Corpus Christi, Magdalene and the Bridge of Sighs. A visit to King's College Chapel is a must. If you're feeling a little lazy, open bus tours let you take in the full charm of the city while you relax. For those who like to cycle, the Cambridge Cherry Hinton Club Campsite offers good cycling paths from the site into and around Cambridge. Just opposite the site, you can enjoy a lovely walk around the nature reserve and old chalk pits. If you're feeling peckish, it's only a short stroll to the nearest pub and if you need to stock up on supplies, a supermarket can be found a little further down the road.
