I think the reason most people do it this way is that from Dublin (where most travelers start) is because the fastest westward roads go to either Cork, Limerick or Galway. Once we had reached the north, we went back to Galway to head back to Dublin.Cork, or Kinsale make an easy journey the first day, and highway driving (going in a straight line, for the most part) is a pretty easy way to get used to driving on the 'wrong' side of the road.I would highly recommend watching some videos about driving in Ireland.My personal opinion only---I couldn't get enough of the area around the Ring of Kerry. I could have spent a week or two there. Galway I could have missed. And Donegal, while it contained our favorite B & B didn't have as much to offer as the south.If I had to do it again (PLEASE!) I'd stay in Kinsale, then go up to Killarney for a week or more. Or shave off a little time and stay in Dingle. Maybe 50-50.Explore Connemara, Kilkee and the Aran Islands from Doolin (again, at least four days) then up to Westport. You could cut this but some of our favorite hikes were there.And back to Dublin.I will say that Slieve League was incredible, but I'm not sure it would be worth trading out for days in the ROK.
