After the train ride, stretch your legs with a walk around Flåm while enjoying the views down the fjord. There are some lovely traditional wooden buildings, a free railway museum, a church dating back to 1670, and if you’re feeling active, bike riding or Scandinavia’s longest zipline.

The drive takes you out of Sogndal along the Rv5, E39, Rv15 and Rv63 all the way to Geiranger. While it’s only 220 kilometres, you should plan to make a day of it as it’s one of those drives that will have you pulling over every few minutes to marvel at the scenery.

Considered by many to be Norway’s most beautiful town, Alesund’s pastel-coloured centre is the result of a near-total rebuild in the early years of the 20th century, after a great fire burnt down most of the city. It’s a great place to spend a couple of hours, strolling through the cobbled streets and around the waterfront to really appreciate the wonderful art nouveau architecture. If you’re interested in delving a little deeper, the Art Nouveau Centre provides a more in-depth understanding of Alesund’s architecture and history.drive Alesund to the Aksla Viewpoint.

Stigfossen cuts through the serpentine Trollstigen, a bucket list-worthy road that zigzags over the course of 11 twists and turns on Norway’s mountains.Buckle up for the remarkable drive to Trollstigen. The journey takes two hours from Alesund, following the Romsdalsfjord east before skirting south of Åndalsnes. The narrow Trollstigen, which roughly translates as the “trolls’ ladder”, is famous for its switchbacks and steep mountainsides, with the path reaching an elevation of 2,790 feet. The famous route took eight years to construct and was opened in 1936 by King Haakon VII.
