free to visit and open all year, such an interesting memorial place to visit - the cemetery, the church and especially the peace memorial ring

Very quiet town on our route to Dijon. The town was quiet on the Sunday afternoon that we arrived - the bars had shut at lunchtime on Sunday. There are a lot of road bike routes from here and the free Aird was a great stop.
Route des Maisons, Chaource, France
Free spot on the edge of Chaucer within walking distance of the village. It’s mostly grass looking out on fields. Super quiet night, there were about twelve other vans when we were here.

Boulevard Chanoine Kir, Dijon, France
///enacted.operated.loosedVery happy with this spot - Pitch 67, no electric. The pitch is HUGE. Very peaceful, looks like it’s walkable to Dijon. English speaking on reception. The Camping Car Park Aire on the other side of the lake has been fully booked all the time we’ve been looking. We couldn’t get this spot for Sunday, but we booked for two nights and good we did because they are fully booked tonight when we’ve got here and turning people away.

It's a really easy walk or bike ride from the campsite to Dijon and we really enjoyed Dijon as a town to walk around, find some history, coffee shops, lunch. Look out for the Owl marker trail markers on the pavements.
Voie Verte (Chalon-sur-Saône - Mâcon), Saint-Gengoux-le-National, France
Free, big flat car park style aire, no elimination but plenty of space. About 9 vans here the night we stopped. You are right on the cycle track, any closer and you'd be on the track - it's that black tarmac in the photo. This is right in the middle of the Route 71 Verte cycle way on the old converted railway. You can hire bikes here. The village is about a 1km walk. We stopped in Les Pieds Bleus bar that also have an artisan grocer with lots of nice stuff and a Boulengere in the village.

And Montgenèvre is the Alpine crossing I'd be looking at. It's at about 1,850 m, so it isn't "low" in an absolute sense, but it's a major, paved year-round crossing rather than one of the marginal high mountain passes. A recent campervan route specifically uses Montgenèvre as the Italy-France crossing and describes it as open year-round. Col de Montgenèvre is built specifically for high-density year-round traffic and international transit.Lower Elevation & Sweeping Road Layout: At 1,850 meters, the road features very wide lanes, gentle gradients, and long, sweeping bends rather than tight hairpin switchbacks. Passing or being passed by heavy goods vehicles is effortless.Ease of Driving on Both Sides: The approach from the Italian side via Oulx and Cesana Torinese is a wide dual-carriageway and national highway that climbs gradually without narrow village choke points.Dedicated Motorhome Stops: Right at the crest of the pass on the French side, Montgenèvre features an expansive motorhome aire (Les Marmottes), allowing you to pull over or overnight without stress.

The drive from Gap to Annecy in a 7-metre campervan is very manageable, highly scenic, and standard for motorhome travel through the French Alps. How comfortable it feels, however, depends heavily on which route you choose.Route Option 1: The Fast & Stress-Free Route (via D1075 & Chambéry)Route: Gap $\rightarrow$ D1075 (toward Lus-la-Croix-Haute) $\rightarrow$ A480/Grenoble bypass $\rightarrow$A41 / D1090 $\rightarrow$ Chambéry $\rightarrow$ Annecy.Road Quality: Excellent, wide, and smooth. The Drive Experience:Instead of taking the higher mountain passes, the D1075 acts as a main, fast north-south bypass road. It climbs gradually over the Col de La Croix-Haute, but the road features wide lanes, sweeping bends, and gentle gradients built specifically to handle heavy goods vehicles and coaches. You will comfortably pass through open valleys without any hair-raising cliff edges, narrow rock overhangs, or tight village bottlenecks.Around Grenoble, you bypass the city center easily via the motorways before taking the wide valley road up past Chambéry straight to Lake Annecy.
